Macquarrie, John
(b. 1919)
   Theologian.
   Macquarrie was educated at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. After serving in a parish, he returned to teach at Glasgow. Subsequently he held a Chair in Systematic Theology at the Union Theological Seminary, New York, and he was appointed Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at Oxford in 1970. Initially influenced by existentialism, he translated heidegger’s Being and Time into English. Among his other works are Principles of Christian Theology, In Search of Deity and Jesus Christ in Modern Thought. He is known as an academic theologian whose work remains accessible to the ordinary Christian lay-person.
